What is Electrofishing?
Electrofishing (aka pond shocking) is an effective method utilized to evaluate the current fish population in your pond or lake. An electrical current is passed through the water and stuns any fish near the surface in close proximity to the boat. While the fish are stunned, they can be easily collected via net. This sampling of fish allows for basic analysis of population health and balance. Following analysis, fish may be returned to pond or may be permanently removed as a step towards achieving a proper population balance, at owner's discretion.
What to Expect
Scheduling: Upon contacting Garrett Pond Resources, a time/date will be suggested to conduct the survey based on several factors (e.g., time of year, weather forecast, pond owner availability).
No more than 3 individuals are allowed on the boat (including Garrett Pond Resources representative). It is preferred that the pond owner participate in the survey; however, it is not necessary.
Upon arrival at the pond, the boat will be set up and placed in the water. The boat will troll the perimeter of the pond and other potential fish habitats. The duration of the survey is highly contingent upon pond size and population sampling.
After the Survey
Data is taken from the fish analysis completed at the survey and a population health index is determined. The pond owner will be sent a report, detailing the steps recommend in order to increase the health of the fish population.
